Your Lower Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Your lower blepharoplasty in Boise will take about 1-2 hours to perform. Depending on your preference, you may be able to use local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. The exact steps of the procedure will vary depending on your goals, anatomy, and technique used by Dr. Vargason. She will create an incision along the lower eyelid during the procedure. The exact placement will be determined before surgery and will be in a location where any potential scars will be well-concealed. The most common areas for an incision are near the lower lashes in a natural crease.

Through the incision, she will remove excess skin and fat from the area. She may additionally reposition some fat to create a more balanced appearance. Skin and muscles beneath the eyes can be tightened or portions removed as needed. After this is complete, your incisions will be closed, and you will be able to begin your recovery.

Different Types of Blepharoplasty

Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty

If excess fat beneath the eyes is your primary concern, the fat will be repositioned and used as a natural filler to smooth the lower eyelid. This is done through an incision placed inside the lower eyelid.

Transcutaneous Blepharoplasty

If you have excess skin and fat beneath the eyes, these can both be addressed. These changes are often due to aging changes around the eyelids. The fat will be repositioned and used as a natural filler to hide shadows. The skin and muscle will be tightened to smooth the lower eyelid. This is done through an incision just below the lower eyelashes.

Dr. Vargason will offer you a comprehensive recovery guide to ensure you remain safe and will be available to answer any questions.

Vision Loss and Lower Eyelid Surgery

With surgery near the eyes, you may be concerned about your vision. Dr. Vargason is a highly experienced surgeon and takes numerous steps to mitigate any potential risks involved in your procedure.

Your Recovery

After your surgery, you may wish to take one to two weeks off work. Most patients can return to work after one week but may appear bruised. Due to gravity, bruising may appear throughout the face and can even appear down to the jawline. This will resolve on its own after two weeks. For the first few days following surgery, you should rest and use a cold compress on the area. After this, you can begin to do light activities.

Dr. Vargason will provide you with an antibiotic ointment to use on your stitches and inside your eyes, which can make your vision blurry. You will return to Dr. Vargason’s office one week after surgery to have your stitches removed and ensure you are healing well. After this appointment, you can resume most normal activities.
